Kindergarten Program
The Kindergarten curricula takes into account the strengths, interests, needs and cultural backgrounds of all the children. Our programs are designed to be "developmentally appropriate," offering experiences, materials and interactions that are both achievable and, at the same time, challenging. The curriculum and classroom environments are structured to promote growth in all areas of development focusing on reading, writing, math, science, social studies, physical education, creative arts and performing arts.
I could not have found a better place for my child's first "school" experience and am so lucky for all of his teachers.
Kindergarten Key Program Areas
Reading and Writing
Our goal is for children to develop a love of reading, learn letter names and sounds and to build a stock of sight words. We also focus on children mastering the following skills: phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, understanding the alphabetic principle that phonemes are what letters stand for, understanding the structure and uses of print including and understanding of language and reading.
Math and Science
We believe that math and science have meaning. They are not a lesson to be learned by children, but something to be experienced and used in a natural way. We believe that an environment rich in opportunities for math and science exploration are essential in meeting the intellectual needs of the whole child. We strive daily to enhance our math and science environment and cater it to each individual child.
Math Goals:
- To see math as an everyday experience, built on previous knowledge and experience
- To discover that math is everywhere
- To master the concept of 1-10. By counting forward and backward and discovering the different combinations of sets
- To count to 100
- To be able to estimate
Science Goals:
- To observe and classify
- To have ideas (predict) and try and test their ideas
- To acknowledge the process and product of ideas
- To observe and measure the results of implementing ideas
- To review and reflect on ideas and their consequences
- To revise or expand original ideas
Social and Emotional Development
Developing a strong sense of self, which leads to self-esteem and self-confidence, is our primary goal in this program area. With this, a child has the foundation upon which all other learning takes place. We want children to feel safe and secure in the school environment and experience successful interactions among peers. Children will feel free to express their feelings and develop a sense of responsibility and respect. Children will grow in areas of curiosity, initiative, confidence, creativity, imagination and empathy. They will learn to successfully solve problems in collaboration with a group.
Physical and Artistic Development
Children need opportunities for movement and self-expression throughout the day. The Kindergarten program encourages children to improve gross motor and fine motor skills by experiencing a variety of movement activities. They will develop awareness of proper health and safety practices and maintain a desirable level of fitness. Children will represent ideas and feelings through pretend play, music, movement and art and promote appreciation for painting, sculpture, music, dance, drama and architectural design.
